I.S. MacLaren has published two dozen essays about the North American North, from the time of Thomas James and Henry Hudson up to the twentieth century. Books by him include *Arctic Artist: The Journal and Paintings of George Back, Midshipman with Franklin, 1819–1822* (1994), and *The Ladies, the Gwich'in, and the Rat: Travels on the Athabasca, Mackenzie, Rat, Porcupine, and Yukon Rivers in 1926* (1998). His most recent northern essays are “Captain Cook’s Alaskan Cruise: A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean (1784) and the Cook/King Journal as Literature," in *Arctic Ambitions: Captain Cook and the Northwest Passage,* ed.
