The Arctic Research Support and Logistics (RSL) program in the Arctic Sciences Section of the Office of Polar Programs at NSF wants to facilitate development of an Arctic Geospatial Information Infrastructure (Arctic GII) as a research support activity. In January 2001 the RSL program sponsored a workshop to discuss the need and potential for improved geospatial data infrastructure to benefit arctic research.
As a follow-on activity to further the development of a circumarctic GIS and other arctic information infrastructure, a meeting of opportunity was held on October 30, 2003 in Seattle Washington, following the SEARCH Open Science Meeting. The goal of the Arctic GIS Planning Meeting was to discuss important next steps in implementing improvements to Arctic GII, and to gather input on priorities and approaches for the development of an Arctic GIS and Arctic Geospatial Information Infrastructure. The meeting summary and recommendations, agenda, participant list, and presentation downloads are available through the navigation menu above.
