The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) invites proposals for postdoctoral research using an integrated remote sensing approach involving active and passive systems to retrieve Arctic melt pond and sea ice characteristics and dynamics.

Proposals should involve the use of any or a combination of airborne and spaceborne optical, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and lidar systems to retrieve melt pond and sea ice parameters. Given that melt pond and sea ice dynamics occur at a range of spatial and temporal scales, a synergistic approach that takes advantage of the unique advantages of various remote sensing systems in an integrated manner is encouraged. The information retrieved from remote sensing assets will be used to improve sea ice modeling and prediction.

The successful applicant will have an interest and expertise in processing and analyzing satellite data (any of optical, SAR, or lidar data), and existing (or the potential to develop) knowledge and skill in several of the following areas: radiative transfer, data fusion, feature extraction, spectral analysis, spectral manipulation of data, polarimetry, and image processing techniques, including statistical methods and machine learning approaches, for processing high-resolution multispectral and hyperspectral imagery.

The successful applicant will have opportunities to participate in other ongoing NRL research projects in the Arctic, including field campaigns, as part of their post-doctoral research.

U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (Green Card) is required for this position.

Application must be submitted through the National Academies' website. However, applicants should first contact Wes Moses (wesley.j.moses.cov [at] us.navy.mil) for an initial discussion.
