The 2023 July Sea Ice Outlook (SIO) Report is now available online. This report, developed by Sea Ice Prediction Network (SIPN) team members, provides an open process for those interested in Arctic sea ice to share predictions and ideas. The 2023 SIO effort is supported with funds from NSF award #1331083.

For the 2023 July report, 30 contributions were received that included pan-Arctic predictions. Of those contributions, nine included predictions for the Alaska region, eight included predictions for pan-Antarctic, and 15 included September mean sea-ice extent anomalies. Additionally we received 17 pan-Arctic forecasts using spatial methods. This report includes discussions of contributed forecasts, Arctic sea-ice extent anomalies, and current Arctic and Alaska regional conditions.

For the pan-Arctic, the median July Outlook value for September 2023 sea-ice extent is 4.66 million square kilometers, slightly higher than June, with quartiles of 4.51 and 4.87 million square kilometers. The median Alaska sea-ice extent forecast is 0.55 million square kilometers and the median Antarctic sea-ice extent forecast is 17.85 million square kilometers, which would be the second lowest Antarctic September sea-ice extent on record.
