Aalto University invites applications for a PhD researcher to work in multi-scale modeling of sea ice deformation on numerical modeling of ridging of sea ice using discrete element method. This position is initially for two years, with possible extension for another two years with a successful mid-term progress review, and will be located in Espoo, Finland.
Applicants should have a strong understanding of solid and computational mechanics and fairly strong programming skills. Suitable backgrounds may include applied and computational mechanics, mechanical engineering, engineering physics, or geophysics. Experience with discrete element method, differential methods, and parallel computing are considered beneficial.
Applications must include:
- Motivation letter (maximum one page);
- Curriculum vitae and other proof of scientific activity (publications, conference papers, etc.);
- A certified copy of Master's degree certificate and official transcript of records;
- An English abstract or summary of the MSc thesis;
- Any other supporting documents, such as recommendation letter; and
- Proof of proficiency in Finnish, Swedish, or English if the applicant is not a native speaker of one of these languages.
All material should be submitted in English. Applicants still in the process of writing their MSc thesis are welcome to apply, but must indicate this clearly in their application.
