The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is accepting abstracts for the AGU Fall Meeting 2022. This hybrid meeting will take place 12-16 December 2022 in Chicago, Illinois and online.

The following session is accepting abstracts:

SESSION GC031: Dynamic Disturbance Processes in Permafrost Regions
Conveners: Dong Chen, Adrian V. Rocha, Gerald V. Frost, and Mark J. Lara

Vast expanses of land areas around the world, including those in the circumpolar tundra, boreal forests, and the Tibetan Plateau, are underlain by permafrost and they are a unique and critical component of the Earth’s system. A variety of natural and anthropogenic disturbance agents exist within the permafrost regions, including wildfire, thermokarst, lake drainage, extreme weather events, and construction of roads, mines, and oil/gas facilities. Through different mechanisms, these disturbances exert various impacts on ecosystems and land-atmosphere interactions at different spatial scales. Over the past decades, the permafrost regions have experienced the highest levels of warming in the world, which has led to changing spatio-temporal patterns and magnitude of disturbance regimes. Unfortunately, due to the remoteness and unforgiving environmental conditions of the permafrost regions, our collective understanding of disturbances in those regions and how they interact with vegetation and climate has been limited. This session aims to collect the most recent findings on disturbance impacts on land surface properties and biogeochemical cycling with the hope to bridge some of the major knowledge gaps and ignite discussions about future research directions.
