The Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University invites applications for an MSc graduate student position in the Polar Remote Sensing Group. The position is expected to be a two-year commitment beginning 1 September 2022, and will be located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The Polar Remote Sensing Group is developing computational methods for microwave satellite remote sensing of the Arctic atmosphere and surface, with a particular focus on water vapor (an important greenhouse gas). The graduate work will involve statistical analysis of the raw satellite measurements and retrieved fields, including comparisons with other data sets and the detection of long-term trends. These activities contribute broadly to global efforts on climate change and numerical weather prediction.
Financial support will be provided through research funding and teaching assistantships. Students undertaking this program will gain valuable expertise in scientific computing, remote sensing, radiative transfer, and atmospheric science.
Requirements for this position include a BSc degree in physics, mathematics, engineering, or computer science, with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7. Computer programming experience (preferably in Python) is also required. Strong mathematical abilities are needed. An atmospheric science background is an asset but not required. Courses in the Department’s graduate atmospheric science curriculum will be completed as part of the degree.
