The Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC) invites applications for an Indigenous Engagement and Communication Specialist. This full-time position will be located in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Indigenous Engagement and Communication Specialist (IECS) will coordinate across agencies and serve as a communication hub between IARPC federal agency members and Indigenous communities, including but not limited to federally recognized tribes, Alaska Native corporations, Alaska Native organizations, and IARPC agency members. The IECS will be responsible for developing, facilitating, and documenting communication linkages between the federal agencies and Indigenous communities. However, the IECS does not replace established Tribal liaisons nor have the authority to speak on behalf of agencies.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Background in communications, community engagement, or negotiation;
  • Masters level degree or equivalent education and experience;
  • Understanding of the FAIR and CARE principles; and
  • Experience using appropriate social media platforms to facilitate communication and information sharing.

Highly desirable candidates will have knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Indigenous communities, traditions, and ways of communicating in Alaska;
  • Demonstrated understanding of Alaska’s cultural diversity;
  • Connections and experiences with Indigenous communities;
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills;
  • Understanding of Indigenous knowledge, conventional science, and co-production of knowledge;
  • Understanding of equity principles in research;
  • Familiarity with the breadth of federal research investment in Alaska;
  • Ability to organize information for public communication purposes;
  • Strong project management, facilitation, and organizational skills to facilitate tracking and dissemination of information; and
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
