The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at the Oregon State University invites applications for an Outreach Coordinator. This fixed-term, three-year position will be located in Corvallis, Oregon.
The Outreach Coordinator has three overlapping areas of leadership: program management for Inspiring Girls Expeditions; coordination of CEOAS community education and outreach; and management of College recruitment activities. These three areas overlap in their goals of engaging regional youth (K-12) and communities with College faculty; increasing the accessibility of earth, ocean, and atmospheric science through hands-on field-based student experiences; improving inclusiveness and diversity of these science communities; and coordinating education, outreach, and leadership-related professional development experiences for graduate students, post docs, and faculty.
Specifically, the person in this position will develop plans for expedition-, field-, and classroom-based education and outreach activities; oversee budgets and logistics; support fundraising; assess risk management; communication (internal and external); plan science content for outreach activities; and work with faculty and staff of CEOAS and the steering committee for the multi-institutional Inspiring Girls Expeditions.
Minimum requirements include:
- Master of Arts (MA)/Master of Science (MS) in field-oriented natural science, outdoor education, or related field OR Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline, outdoor education, or related field AND two years of experience in science education and outreach, or outdoor education and leadership;
- Demonstrated ability to oversee group logistics for field research and/or outdoor education;
- Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain large amounts of information;
- Demonstrated commitment to educational equity and an inclusive learning environment in a multicultural setting;
- Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and solve problems without close supervision; and
- Demonstrably strong communication skills through phone, email, and in person, both individually and in front of an audience.
Preferred skills include:
- Experience in science outreach, outdoor science education, and field-based scientific research;
- Experience with and understanding of inquiry-based teaching, outdoor leadership education, and youth mentoring;
- Experience or training in organizational social justice, equity, and inclusion; and
- Experience in planning and coordinating workshops, science demonstration, seminars, or camps.
This position primarily works in a classroom or office setting. Travel is required to visit schools and communities, lead field-based educational activities, and lead teams in remote and rugged outdoor settings. Work in the field will require the ability to hike off-trail.
