The Norwegian Ice Service at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute invites applications for a research scientist/scientific programmer in sea ice remote sensing. This three-year position will be located in Tromsø, Norway.
The Ice Service is responsible for sea ice and iceberg mapping in the European Arctic with a focus on Svalbard, and collaborates actively with national and international partners to implement research results into services that are relevant to society.
Duties of this position will include:
- Evaluating the user requirements for processing satellite data relevant for sea ice mapping, particularly Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) from Sentinel-1;
- Developing a concept and design of a processing chain to utilize existing systems, including the Norwegian National Ground Segment for Copernicus, Polar-TEP, and the in-house computing systems at the Meteorological Institute; and
- Evaluating results and implementing them into a final operational system.
Required qualifications include:
- High-level education degree in Earth science, applied mathematics, or similar field;
- Experience with use of artificial intelligence techniques for analysis of satellite or other remote sensing data, particularly SAR;
- Experience and documented knowledge in applied mathematics/scientific programming in a Linux environment;
- Strong and demonstrated Python programming skills; and
- Proficiency in the English language.
Additional desired qualifications include experience with cloud-based computing systems, experience with version control, experience using supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms, understanding of Synthetic Aperture Radar principles, and fluency in Norwegian or a willingness to learn Norwegian.
