COURSE OFFERING

Two sections of Arctic Field Ecology (University of Minnesota, EEB 5842, 5
credits) are being offered this summer (June-July-August 1999).

The first section will explore the region west of Bathurst Inlet in the
central Canadian Arctic with travel by kayak along the Hiukitak River.
There will be a focus on the vegetation and natural history of the area. A
"traditional ecological knowledge" component will taught by a local Inuit
wildlife expert.

The second section will be an air transect from the northern to the
southern Canadian Arctic in conjunction with an expedition by members of
the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Mapping Project (CAVM). This will focus
on climate and substrate related variation in vegetation along this arctic
transect. Six students will be accompanied by an international group of
Arctic vegetation scientists.

Both sections are open to undergraduate and graduate students and will be
an exciting introduction to the Arctic and to field research in the natural
sciences.
