For more information about the web-based Arctic Engineering course
described below, contact the UAA School of Engineering at: 907/786-1900
or afops [at] uaa.alaska.edu (Dr. Orson P. Smith).
Beginning 8 January 2001, the University of Alaska Anchorage will
present CE A603 "Arctic Engineering" in a 100 percent web-based format.
This 3-credit graduate course will introduce students to a broad
spectrum of engineering challenges that are unique to cold regions of
the world. Physical principles and practical data collection methods,
analyses, designs, and construction methods will be discussed. Students
will gain a working knowledge of cold regions engineering problems and
modern solutions as a basis for more detailed study. CE A603 is the
first course in a graduate program of study leading to a Master of
Science in Arctic Engineering. For more information, see
http://www.engr.uaa.alaska.edu/soe/
Successful completion of the course will satisfy the Alaska regulation
governing registration and licensing by the State Board of Registration
for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors (12 AAC 36.110), which
reads "...An applicant for registration as an architect, engineer, or
landscape architect must have successfully completed a board-approved
university level course in arctic engineering or its equivalent...." The
Board's Licensing Examiner is notified by the UAA School of Engineering
after final grades are recorded of students who passed the course.
Grades are not reported to the Board.
Students may enroll by telephone via the Wolfline (see
http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/). Once enrolled by UAA, students will be
registered on the course web site at http://Blackboard.uaa.alaska.edu/.
The web-based course will generally follow a conventional 16-week
semester schedule with new course content modules available weekly.
Otherwise, the course will be asynchronous with no scheduled class
meetings, physical or virtual. Homework, papers, and exams will all be
transmitted via email or the web. The textbook is written by Eranti, E.,
and G. Lee, 2000. Cold Region Structural Engineering, McGraw-Hill, ISBN
0-07-244101-1. The book may be ordered online from the UAA Bookstore at
http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/bookstore/.
