REC 475P - ECOTOURISM AND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
IN THE CANADIAN SUBARCTIC

The University of Waterloo, Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies
will be offering a field ecotourism course in Churchill, Manitoba, on
the edge of the Hudson Bay, 17-27 August 2001. The course earns the
standard undergrad term course weighting (Ω credit). Churchill, Manitoba
is an internationally renowned destination for polar bears, birds,
beluga whales, and northern lights. This course will blend both applied
field research with traditional classroom lectures. Topics covered
during the course will include: biodiversity conservation; protected
area management; sustainable resource management; wilderness recreation
management; ecotourism; local community participation; monitoring and
evaluation; and field-based data collection. Accommodations will be
provided by the Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC). The CNSC is a
research and education facility located in the Cape Churchill Wildlife
Management Area, 25 km outside of Churchill.
