is dedicated to protecting the ecological and cultural integrity of the
Arctic for present and future generations. CCU works to promote
understanding and cooperation among diverse arctic interests, to raise
public awareness of and build a global constituency for the Arctic, and
to advocate for a comprehensive legal and policy regime for the Arctic.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Circumpolar Conservation Union (CCU), a project of The Tides Center,
seeks a highly qualified professional as full-time director of its
Washington office. The Washington Director should have substantial
policy advocacy, fundraising, managerial and administrative experience,
and an ability to motivate and work effectively with a diversity of
interests on trans-boundary and cross-cultural issues.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibility for government relations, communications, and
overseeing small office. Work with Executive Director and Advisory Board
to plan, develop, and implement annual program goals and objectives,
including budgetary. Direct CCU's Northern Contaminants and Health
Campaign to educate the public and decision makers about the threat of
persistent pollutants on ecosystems and human health. Work domestically
with Congress, the Administration, and relevant agencies, as well as the
State of Alaska, non-governmental, tribal, and grassroots organizations.
Monitor international Arctic Council activities, engage targeted NGO
expertise and promote public participation in its work. Produce written
and electronic media; raise funds; build organizational capacity and
infrastructure; manage operations. Plan, develop, and implement
strategies using technology to strengthen public education, advocacy,
and fundraising efforts while boosting office efficiency and program
productivity. Coordinate consultants, supervise office staff,
volunteers, and interns. Travel as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
At least seven years strong advocacy, management, and/or Capitol Hill
experience. Proven ability to raise funds from foundations and other
sources. Advanced degree in law, environment or health, public policy,
or relevant social science preferred. Strong commitment to and passion
for the region and its peoples. Prior experience demonstrating
exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, and attention to
detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to
work well under pressure, meet deadlines, successfully perform multiple
tasks and manage priorities a must. Russian language proficiency, and
demonstrated knowledge of Alaska and circumpolar arctic issues highly
desirable. Sense of humor appreciated.
