From 29-31 March 2001 the Department of Ethnography of The British
Museum will host an international conference on Arctic Clothing of North
America - Alaska, Canada and Greenland. Adopting a comparative and
historical perspective, 32 speakers will explore contemporary and
traditional costume creation and consumption, questions of identity, the
semiotics and functions of dress, and the great diversity of national
and community styles.
The following sessions are planned:
- The Contemporary Use and Significance of Traditional Clothing
- Historical Perspectives
- Technique and Style
- Insights from Museum Collections
- Symbolism
- Clothing in Art - Clothing as Art
The conference will be held in the BP Lecture Theatre, in the Clore
Education Centre at The British Museum, London, UK.
The conference is a project associated with the Clothworkers - Centre
for World Textiles, presently planned to open in 2003 as part of the new
British Museum Study Centre. It will coincide with the exhibition
Annuraaq - Arctic Clothing from Igloolik (15 February- 27 May),
sponsored by BP as part of the BP Ethnography Showcase programme,
accompanied by the COMPASS tour Annuraaq - Clothing of Arctic North
America.
