International Symposium "Actual Problems of Ecological Physiology and
Human Health in the Arctic"

organized by the Institute of Physiology, Ural Division, Russian Academy
of Sciences.
Syktyvkar is a capital of the Komi Republic. It is the largest province
in the European part of Russia stretching from 58'NC to 69'NC.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
The symposium will be of interest to those specialising in the problems
of human health in the Arctic and certain aspects of Human Ecological
Physiology. Physiologists and physicians working in Circumpolar areas
are especially invited to discuss the most actual problems the
inhabitants of the Arctic are faced with.
The symposium will include lectures, oral presentations and posters. The
working languages are Russian and English.
THE MAIN TOPICS:
- Human health in Circumpolar area;
- Social aspects of human adaptation in Circumpolar areas;
- Children and age Physiology in the North;
- Cardio-respiratory system functioning in the North;
- Human metabolism in the Arctic;
- Occupational health in mining industry, oil and gas industries in the
North;
- Key medical problems the indigenous peoples in the North are faced
with;
- Labour Physiology in Arctic area.
The abstracts will be published before the official opening of the
symposium. The final date for submitting the abstracts is 15 April 2001.
Abstracts should contain the following information:
- Title
- Name of author(s). Author's affiliation and address, telephone, fax
and e-mail address
- Body of the abstract (only 1 page please)
Abstracts should be in Word for Windows, size 12 Times Roman, 1,5
spacing, left margin -3 cm, right margin - 1.5 cm, top and bottom margin

GETTING TO SYKTYVKAR (Airplane or Train)
There are 2 options for getting to Syktyvkar from Moscow and
St.Petersburg. There is a daily flight connection (appr. 1.5 hours of
flight). Aircraft fee is about 100 USD one way (return ticket costs
about 170 USD). The train travel lasts 26 hours, costing about 50 USD
one way in first-class sleeping car.
The Organizing Committee may provide for booking tickets.
