Dear Colleague:

I am writing to invite your participation in the ARCUS 13th Annual
Meeting and Arctic Forum 2001 scheduled for 23-25 May 2001. All sessions
of the meeting will be held at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel in
Arlington, Virginia. In addition to highlighting important arctic
research through the Arctic Forum, our annual science symposium, the
ARCUS annual meeting serves to gather members of the arctic research
community and key agency personnel and policy makers together with ARCUS
member institution representatives, the Board of Directors, and the
staff of ARCUS.

This year, the Council Forum, the meeting of ARCUS' member institution
representatives, will include a panel presentation on effectively
advocating for arctic science at the federal level. Speakers will
discuss the federal budget process, how research fits into the budget,
and how to communicate the importance of arctic research to your
Congress person and other policy and decision makers.

ARCTIC FORUM 2001
You are invited to submit an abstract for a poster presentation at the
Arctic Forum 2001, scheduled for Thursday, 24 May and Friday, 25 May.
The Arctic Forum will be chaired by Dr. John Hobbie, of the Marine
Biological Laboratory, and will include invited talks by arctic
researchers and policy experts representing diverse disciplines,
projects, and programs. This year the Arctic Forum will focus on
interactions between the physical and biological systems in the Arctic.
Dr. Robert Corell of the Atmospheric Policy Program at the American
Meteorological Society will give a keynote address. Charles H. Johnson,
Executive Director of the Alaska Nanuuq Commission, will give a second
keynote. The four student recipients of the fifth annual ARCUS Award for
Arctic Research Excellence also will present their award-winning papers
during the Forum. The online abstract submission form is available at
http://www.arcus.org/annual_meeting_01/posters.shtml.
