Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Climate Change Research
(DISCCRS) - a New Program for Recent PhDs in Climate Change Research

http://aslo.org/phd.html

The transition from student to independent researcher is a challenging
one, particularly for those engaged in interdisciplinary research. To
address this, American Geophysical Union (AGU), American Society of
Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), American Meteorological Society
(AMS), and Ecological Society of America (ESA) are jointly sponsoring a
new initiative for recent PhDs. The program targets graduates completing
their last PhD requirement after 1 January 2000 and whose work in any
discipline is relevant to the causes and consequences of climate change.
The goal is to promote interactions across the full range of disciplines
engaged in climate change and its impacts.

DISCCRS promotes interactions among atmospheric, terrestrial, and
aquatic scientists and fosters links to relevant social science disciplines.
Modeled on the Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Limnology
and Oceanography (DIALOG) and its progenitor, the Dissertations Symposium
in Chemical Oceanography (DISCO), DIALOG and DISCCRS share common elements:

  • An online, searchable PhD Dissertation Registry introduces grads to
the community and provides a concise overview of recent advances from
    around the world.

  • An electronic distribution list forms a 'virtual community' of climate
change scholars. Job and other announcements are transmitted to recent
grads. Messages may be sent to: phd [at] whitman.edu for distribution.

  • A symposium that fosters international, interdisciplinary
understanding and collegial networks. Up to 40 recent PhDs will present
their research, meet with agency representatives, and discuss emerging
research, education, and policy issues. The symposium is scheduled for
9-14 March 2003 in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico. Graduates completing their
    last PhD requirement between 1 January 2000 - 30 September 2002 are
    eligible.

    ***** APPLICATION DEADLINE IS: 6 October 2002 *****

Symposium space is expected to be limited. A committee will select
participants based on the application materials submitted. Selection
will favor those who plan to pursue interdisciplinary research careers
addressing climate change and its impacts. Scholarships will cover
travel and on-site expenses for symposium participants.

Aquatic scientists may participate in both DIALOG and DISCCRS. DIALOG
targets biological, chemical, geological, and physical scientists whose
work is relevant to biologically oriented limnology or oceanography.
DISCCRS targets all graduates whose work is relevant to the causes and
consequences of climate change.

DISCCRS and DIALOG are funded by NASA, NSF, NOAA, and ONR.

Please encourage ALL recent PhDs in relevant disciplines to register
their PhD dissertations. The Dissertation Registry, program information,
and symposium application instructions are available at:
