Post-Doctoral Fellowship Opportunity at the Bedford Institute of
Oceanography
The Arctic Coastal Dynamics (ACD) program is an international effort to
compile and analyze information on arctic coastal change and inputs of
sediment and carbon into the arctic seas. The program is supported by
the International Arctic Science Committee, the International Permafrost
Association, and a network of arctic coastal scientists. The
International Arctic Research Center with support from the Geological
Survey of Canada and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has funded a
post-doctoral position to investigate spatial and temporal trends in
circum-Arctic coastal environmental forcing. The primary objective of
this position is to evaluate observations, hindcasts, and modeled data
which describe the oceanographic and meteorological environmental
conditions along arctic coasts, with specific emphasis on those
variables which play a role in land-ocean-atmosphere interactions. These
data include wind, pressure, and temperature records from arctic coastal
meteorological stations; water-level, wave, water temperature, salinity
and current data from oceanographic stations; sea-ice data from
satellites and national ice services as well as hindcasts of
meteorological data from reanalysis products and oceanographic data from
models. These analyses will be used to identify temporal and spatial
variability and trends, which can be used to investigate the relations
between environmental forcing and responses of the physical coastal
system, which include components unique to high-latitude coasts. Of
particular interest to this project is the analysis of storm frequency
and intensity and the genesis and evolution of coastal tracking
open-water storms.
The position will be located at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography
(BIO) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. BIO is Canada's premier
oceanographic institute with more than 500 marine and coastal
scientists. The starting date is immediate and the competition will
remain open until it is filled. The salary is based on Natural Sciences
and Engineering Research Council guidelines and the position is open to
all nationalities.
