Announcement and Call for Abstracts for
International Workshop on Small-Scale Sea Ice-Ocean Modeling (SIOM) for
Nearshore Beaufort and Chukchi Seas
Fairbanks, Alaska, USA
8-9 August 2002
SPONSORED BY:
Minerals Management Service (MMS), U.S. Department of the Interior
School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) and
International Arctic Research Center (IARC)-Frontier Research System for
Global Change (FRSGC), University of Alaska Fairbanks
http://www.frontier.iarc.uaf:8080/SIOM-Workshop-02/
PERSPECTIVE:
The workshop will bring together the leading experts to discuss the
present status and future direction of small-scale and regional
sea-ice-ocean modeling, leading to a better approach for using the
state-of-the-art ice-ocean models. The focus of the workshop will be on
future ice-ocean modeling and MMS needs in inshore Beaufort Sea waters,
including seasonal landfast ice. The workshop will produce
recommendations on the best modeling approaches based on the current
research in small-scale and regional ice-ocean modeling in polar and
subpolar regions.
OBJECTIVES:
One of the objectives of this workshop is to bring researchers and
modelers together in ice-ocean modeling of state-of-the-art to highlight
MMS's needs as a good preliminary phase. The workshop will highlight all
participants' approaches in small-scale and regional ice-ocean modeling
that could be applied to the nearshore Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The
focus of the workshop will be on the future ice-ocean modeling in inshore
Beaufort waters, including seasonal landfast ice and marginal ice zone
(MIZ).
The workshop will promote discussion of the following topics:
- Recent progress of small-scale and regional ice-ocean modeling
- Types of ice rheology and yield curve that fit better for small-scale
ice dynamics
- Ice thickness distribution and multi-level ice modeling
- High frequency ice mechanics and simulation of oriented fracture
- Landfast ice and modeling
- Remote-sensed and in-situ data for model validation
The workshop may lead to formation of an international working group for
modeling small-scale ice-ocean dynamics.
CONFERENCE FORMAT:
Participants are asked to submit one-page abstracts (or up to 4 page
extended abstract if necessary) in advance of the workshop (see below),
including title, authors' names, affiliations, and email addresses. The
organizers/steering committee will select a number of papers for oral
presentation on each of the primary topics, including one invited
speaker at each session. Other papers will be selected as poster, and
time will be made available for a dedicated poster session, including a
brief oral introduction of all posters.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:
Participants should submit their one-page or extended 4-page (including
figures) abstracts to Dr. Jia Wang (jwang [at] iarc.uaf.edu) with a copy to
the workshop coordinator, Ms. Kathy Glodowski (katcam [at] iarc.uaf.edu) by
16 March 2002 (preferred text, MS Word). The abstract should fit on a
single A4 or US Letter (8.5x11''), using font Times New Roman, no
smaller than 10 points, with minimum 2.5 cm (1") margin all around. They
should be sent electronically to katcam [at] iarc.uaf.edu.
REGISTRATION AND FEES:
There are no registration fees. Registration can be done electronically
(email and online) or by fax (see the Registration Form).
TRAVEL SUPPORT:
The workshop organizers will cover travel expenses for up to 15
participants (including round trip airfare, per diem, hotel and local
transportation) if they have no funding from their institutions.
Participants from government labs are encouraged to use their own
funding for traveling. Please contact Dr. Jia Wang (jwang [at] iarc.uaf.edu)
for financial support to attend the workshop (also see the Registration
Form).
LETTER OF INVITATION FOR VISA APPLICATIONS:
Those requiring a visa to attend the conference will need a letter of
invitation from the local hosts. Please contact the workshop
coordinator, Ms. Kathy Glodowski (katcam [at] iarc.uaf.edu), International
Arctic Research Center-Frontier, University of Alaska Fairbanks. Please
allow enough time to complete the procedure prior to the workshop.
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE:
- Dr. Roger Colony (International Arctic Research Center-FRSGC, USA)
- Dr. Jari Haapala (University of Helsinki, Finland)
- Dr. Moto Ikeda (University of Hokkaido, and Frontier Research System
for Global Change, Japan)
- Dr. Francois Saucier (Maurice Lamontagne Institute, Department of
Fisheries and Oceans, Canada)

VENUE AND INFORMATION:
The workshop will be held at the International Arctic Research Center
(http://www.iarc.uaf.edu), University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks,
Alaska, USA, 8-9 August 2002. The local organizing committee will
reserve rooms in local hotels. Further information on transport and
accommodation will be sent to those who wish to attend.
