HARC Online Workshops coming in April are:
15-17 April 2002
Human Dimensions of the Hydrologic Cycle
22-24 April 2002
Human Dimensions of Nearshore and Coastal Processes
The Human Dimensions of the Arctic System (HARC) Science Management
Office (SMO) is organizing two online workshops for April 2002 to
develop project-level ideas incorporating HARC research within the new
and emerging themes in the Arctic System Science (ARCSS) Program at the
National Science Foundation. The workshop discussions will help generate
ideas leading to research proposals, establishing human dimensions as an
integral component of each theme. For more information about the HARC
initiative, previous HARC online workshops, and current HARC-funded
research see: http://www.arcus.org/harc
The first online workshop, focusing on human dimensions of the arctic
hydrological cycle, will be held 15-17 April. Larry Hinzman (University
of Alaska Fairbanks) and Larry Hamilton (University of New Hampshire)
will moderate the online discussion. The purpose of this workshop is to
identify and discuss research needed to investigate the interactions
between humans and hydrological processes in the Arctic. Many of these
interactions are identified in the Arctic-CHAMP science plan, which is
useful background reading for this workshop and is available online at:
http://www.arcus.org/ARCSS/hydro/index.html
The second online workshop, focusing on human dimensions of arctic
nearshore and coastal processes, will be held 22-24 April. Lee Cooper
(University of Tennessee) and Anne Jensen (Ukpeagvik Inupiat
Corporation, Science Division) will moderate the online discussions. The
purpose of this workshop is to discuss potential research investigating
human uses of and influence on the nearshore areas of the Arctic and
affects of changes to the nearshore zone on people.
Detailed information about the online workshops, including registration
information, will be distributed via ArcticInfo in early April.
Presentations from the recent ARCSS All-Hands Workshop given by leaders
of the Arctic-CHAMP and Nearshore initiatives may provide useful
background information. These presentations can be downloaded at:
