POSITIONS OPEN UNTIL FILLED

The Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University seeks to
fill three positions in its newly established "Program in Glacial
Assessment and Research" with emphasis on both physical and human
dimensions. This program is part of the OSU Global Climatic and
Environmental Change Program and involves collaborations between the
Byrd Polar Research Center and the Departments of Geography, Geological
Sciences, and Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Sciences.
The objective of the Glacial Assessment program is to assess changes in
the volume and extent of polar and temperate glaciers and to evaluate
societal implications, with emphasis on water resources. Candidates are
expected to engage in the multidisciplinary approach and to collaborate
with Faculty and Research Staff at OSU.

Specifically, the following positions are available:

SENIOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: GLACIAL MODELING:
We are seeking a person with a strong background in glacier dynamics and
glacier-climate interactions who will head the glacial modeling efforts.
This person will develop theoretical underpinnings and, in concert with
others involved, identify glaciers for long-term monitoring. We
anticipate focusing on different types of glaciers including alpine
glaciers, polar ice sheets, and floating ice shelves, to determine the
glaciological processes most affected by climate change. This position
is 50 percent funded through the Glacial Assessment Program. For the
first two years additional funds are available but the successful
applicant is expected to generate complementary funding from external
funding agencies after this initial period.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW: REMOTE SENSING APPLICATIONS:
This individual will work closely with others to use spaceborne
instruments to identify, locate, and measure physical properties of
glaciers, to apply geomatic techniques for directly measuring surface
topography and ice velocity, to develop and apply tools for measuring
changes in glacier extent and volume. This position is for two years
with the possibility of extension depending on the availability of
funds.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW: NUMERICAL MODELING:
The successful candidate must have a demonstrated expertise in numerical
modeling sufficient to support the glaciological efforts of others
involved in this project. A substantive focus will be the interaction
between subglacial geology and glacier flow. A combination of geological
expertise and knowledge of glacier dynamics is required to develop
models of ice flow and ice-margin fluctuations and processes for
selected glaciers and ice caps. Knowledge of spatial geostatistics, or
familiarity with structural interpretation of rifted margins, and fjord
and shelf sediments, will be considered a plus. This position is for two
years with the possibility of extension depending on the availability of
funds.

Applications should include a complete resume, a statement outlining
research interests, and names and addresses of at least three
individuals who could provide references.
