The Polar Research Board of The National Academies is seeking an
exceptional person with strong scientific expertise and an interest in
applying science in the policy arena. A Program Officer is responsible
for all aspects of the Board's work - designing studies, working with
agencies and committees of experts, analyzing complex issues, and
preparing reports. It's an incredible work environment - our staff of

Qualifications:
Requires ability to review and analyze scientific literature, good
organization and leadership skills, ability to work productively in a
team environment, and familiarity with the polar science community.
Excellent oral and written communications skills are essential.
Backgrounds in a variety of fields will be considered (physical or
biological oceanography, geology, geophysics, biology, ecology, or
interdisciplinary areas.). The job is located in Washington DC. Some
travel is required. Position requires a minimum of MA/MS and 4 years of
experience, but Ph.D. and 1-2 years of experience is preferred.

Responsibilities:
- Plan and direct technical and policy studies related to a diversity of
scientific issues in the Arctic, Antarctic, and cold regions.
- Manage the study process, including organizing meetings of scientific
experts; gathering and analyzing information; guiding the evolution of
committee reports; facilitating group dynamics, and keeping projects on
time and within budgets.
- Effectively express complex technical and policy information in
various written forms, including status reports, project summaries, and
detailed committee reports.
- Assist in the preparation of proposals and the committee selection
process.
- Develop and maintain contacts with academic scientists and government
personnel.
- Supervise support staff.
