Scientists interested in field studies in the Arctic Ocean including but
not limited to sea ice studies, atmospheric measurements, active Sun
studies and through-the-ice oceanographic studies should be aware that
the High Latitude Dynamics Program of the Office of Naval Research will
make available a pre-existing Navy Ice Camp during the period from
11 April 2003 for approximately two weeks at a location 100-150 n. mi.
north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
The camp will have berthing facilities for up to 30 researchers, a mess
facility, and extensive communication gear (Iridium, Inmarsat, etc.). In
addition, supporting gear (snow machines, ice augurs, winches and other
oceanographic equipment) may be made available if needed by researchers.
Facilities will be available for making holes up to 36 inches in
diameter through the ice. Polar bear protection and local
communications will be provided for work outside the normal camp limits.
Twice-daily Twin Otter flights to Prudhoe Bay are planned. Maximum size
for a Twin Otter shipment is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet and not more
than 400 pounds. ONR will support investigator's logistics needs once
they reach Prudhoe Bay with their gear, but transportation to Prudhoe
Bay and additional research support (e.g., science time, students, etc.)
is not envisioned. Deadhorse, the airport for Prudhoe Bay, has daily jet
service by Alaska Airlines.
