NSIDC, http://nsidc.org, serves as a national information and referral
center in support of snow and ice research. Our mission is to make
fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing
data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of
the Earth system. NSIDC is part of the Cooperative Institute for
Research in Environmental Sciences (http://CIRES.colorado.edu) at the
University of Colorado at Boulder, in partnership with NOAA. Many of our
research projects are sponsored by NASA and NSF.
Position Overview
The NSIDC Deputy Director will be the chief operating officer of the
Center in this newly created position to further the NSIDC science
mission. He or she will be directly responsible for the day-to-day
operation of the Center, including 70 personnel, resource allocation and
budgets, facilities, infrastructure development, and development and
implementation of Center-wide policies and procedures. The Deputy
Director will oversee Service Group Managers and coordinate with Program
Managers to ensure programs receive adequate and timely resources and
that objectives are met. He or she will directly supervise 10 managerial
and administrative positions. In coordination with the Center Director
and the Lead Scientist, he or she will be responsible for Center-wide

Required Qualifications
1. 5+ years of senior level organization management experience
2. Knowledge of sound business practices: organizing, prioritizing and
scheduling, fiscal management, and customer service
3. Demonstrated decision making skills
4. Proven interpersonal, communication, and administrative and personnel
skills
5. Proven leadership skills
6. Knowledge of scientific data management or related field
7. A Bachelor's degree in any field
Desirable Skills
1. Advanced degree in management or related field
2. Work experience in a non-profit or grant-driven environment
3. Work experience in a Federal grant environment, esp. program
management
4. Ability to mediate and solve conflicts
5. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
6. Ability to manage organizational change
7. Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies, and
procedures
8. Knowledge of Earth and environmental sciences
The position will be filled as an Administrative Associate of
appropriate level within CIRES and as a Professional Research Assistant
at the University of Colorado at Boulder and will be eligible for
