Dear Colleague:
We wish to draw your attention to a new report describing emerging
research areas in polar biology.
"Frontiers in Polar Biology in the Genomics Era" has been published by
the National Research Council. The report resulted from a year-long
study sponsored by the National Science Foundation and carried out by a
committee assembled by the Academy's Division of Earth and Life Studies
and its Polar Research Board.
"The era of 'genome-enabled' biology is upon us, and these new
technologies will allow us to examine polar biological questions of
unprecedented scope and to do so with extraordinary scope and
precision," states the report summary.
The committee was chaired by H. William Detrich III. The other members
on the committee were Jody W. Deming, Claire Fraser, James "Tim"
Hollibaugh, William Mohn, John C. Priscu, George N. Somero, Michael F.
Thomashow, and Diana Wall.
