OVERVIEW
The Alaska Field Course is offered by the Denali Institute in
cooperation with the University of California Santa Cruz and the
University of Alaska Anchorage. Students can apply for up to three
credits through either university.

During the 16-day field course, students study Alaska's biological
diversity, ecology, physical geology, ethnology, and natural resource
policy. They also examine how the natural environment shapes the
political, economic, and human complexities of the sub arctic.
Throughout the course, students interact with scientists, resource
managers, and professionals representing Alaska Native organizations,
government agencies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Students
also participate in ongoing research examining global climate change and
plant succession following glaciation.

OBJECTIVES
The course has three basic objectives:
(1) to study biological diversity in a variety of Alaskan environments
(2) to provide firsthand field experiences in the biological and physical
sciences through working directly with local researchers and resource
managers
(3) to introduce the rich ethnology of Alaska

FORMAT
This course utilizes several study locations throughout the length of
the program for a comprehensive view of the diverse habitats in Alaska.
Orientation begins at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Students then
travel to the Kenai Peninsula, Chugach State Park and Prince William
Sound, and Denali National Park and Preserve.

Cost of Course: $2,000.00

This cost includes all program and instructor fees, text, transportation
in Alaska, lodging, and most meals. The cost does not include university
fees for credit.
