GOALS OF THE WORKSHOP
The International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences workshop is a forum to discuss ways to combine international resources and experience to facilitate ice coring science. This collaboration may be a way to reduce the overall cost of the science.
Specific objectives of the workshop will include:
joint identification of the scientific questions to be addressed by the next ice coring projects planned by participating entities
identification of current logistical and technical challenges to carrying out these projects
exposition of current planning and logistical practices that will help identify resources that might potentially be shared among the participating entities early in the planning stages
sharing of lessons learned on prior drilling projects carried out over the past thirty years
identification of cross-cutting resource deployment issues that may best be addressed by collaboration
The desired outcomes from the discussion of these issues include:
- the identification of common interests and issues that invite cooperative partnering on upcoming projects
identification of efficiencies of scale and potential for cost savings that can be realized by sharing resources
identification of near-term and long-range opportunities for sharing and cross training of skilled personnel
identification of critical, common technical challenges and next steps to solve these challenges in order to insure maximum return on the investment for both the science and funding entities
PARTICIPATION
Participation in the meeting will be open to all. The steering committee has identified and invited key personnel from the major ice core laboratories. Those invited will have their travel cost covered but expected to:
Provide a National Report of current and future ice core activities by
January 26, 2004The reports should represent the National interest, not just the interest of the invitee.
