Special Session at 2004 Joint Assembly
GC02: Northern Climate Properties, Trends, and Impacts of Change:
Past, Present, and Future
American Geophysical Union - Canadian Geophysical Union Joint Meeting
Montreal, Canada
17 - 21 May 2004

The 2004 Joint Assembly includes a partnership between CGU, AGU, SEG and
EEGS. The Program Committee is developing a Union-wide science program
in the traditional AGU form and spirit. In addition, sessions related to
the uses or applications of the geophysical sciences will be provided.
SESSION DESCRIPTION
The state and anticipated changes of climate are of major concern for
Northern countries. Human settlements, infrastructure and natural
ecosystems in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions are fragile and vulnerable
to anticipated global warming. The complexity of the Northern Climate
properties still needs better scientific understanding to answer these
questions properly. We invite presentations that discuss variety of
questions related to characterization of the state of climate and
climate change impacts in the North. Analyses of historical, current
data and future scenarios are welcome. Particular topics for discussion
are related but not limited to:
1) Modeling of Northern climate;
2) Monitoring and analysis of northern climate components including
water, carbon and energy cycles, snow/ice, permafrost and vegetation
3) Radiation budget and surface albedo, climate radiative forcing
4) Northern ecosystem properties and potential response to climate
change
5) Landcover classification and landcover change (tree line, wetland
distribution etc) using remote sensing methods
6) Climate change impacts on coastal zone in Arctic
7) Paleo-climatic variability and future climate scenarios
8) Socio - economic impacts of climate change in the North
