BACKGROUND
The UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs is recruiting a scientist for a
position at the National Ice Center (NIC). The NIC is located just
outside Washington, DC in Suitland, MD. Their mission is to provide near
real time support to vessels operating in ice-infested waters and to
synoptically monitor the ice cover of the polar seas and the Great
Lakes. Analyses and forecasts are derived from satellite imagery in the
visible, infrared, and active and passive microwave portions of the
electromagnetic spectrum. Models and algorithms transitioned from the
science community to the operational environment have proven invaluable
tools to the ice analyst. The NIC Science Unit is responsible for
outlining how the NIC can improve products for both the science and
operational communities and how the science community can make
algorithms, models, and interpretation guides for implementation at the
NIC. The NIC Science Department currently works in a Linux and Windows
development environment.
OBJECTIVE
The program offers up to a three year visiting research appointment,
reviewed annually. The objective of the program is to bridge the
operational ice analysis performed at the NIC with the work performed in
the ice research community.
POSITION SPECIFICS
In the currently advertised position, the incumbent will lead a project
to develop sea ice products using data from newly emerging satellite
sensors such as NASA QuikSCAT, AMSR-E, WindSat, ALOS, and MODIS. The
center is also keenly interested in integrating models with satellite
data through data assimilation techniques. The applicant must have a
strong working knowledge of ice physics, remote sensing and/or ice
modeling, and a willingness to develop, test, and validate new
algorithms. Preference will be given to applicants with prior data
assimilation experience.
Visitors to NIC will be employees of the University Corporation for
Atmospheric Research (UCAR). They will be subject to and covered by
UCAR policies with respect to all personnel matters. The benefits
