The National Science Foundation is seeking candidates for a Program
Director position within the Office of the Director, Division of
Infrastructure and Logistics.
Position Description:
The management and funding of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP)
is the responsibility of the National Science Foundation. In addition to
the funding and planning of the scientific program, the Office of Polar
Programs (OPP) is responsible for the management of the logistics
support to ensure that the scientific objectives can be met in an
orderly and efficient manner. The Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics
Division (AIL) of the Office of Polar Programs is organized to fulfill
these logistic functions at both NSF headquarters and in the field.
The person selected for this position will be responsible for the
planning, development, and coordination of operations support plans for
up to 50 scientific projects that are supported on each of two research
vessels, as well as other special projects that are supported on land by
vessels or are on other contracted or foreign nation vessels.
As a National Science Foundation science representative, the person
selected will deploy to USAP stations or vessels for periods of up to
two months each year and will conduct site reviews and oversight for
program activities on USAP stations and research vessels.
The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting in the
development requirements, scientific and engineering, for long range and
multi-year plans to support future shipboard and ship supported
scientific projects. As the AIL specialist for all Antarctic ship-based
science logistics support, the selected candidate will coordinate these
activities with the Program Officers in the OPP Science Section, and
with other managers in AIL, principle investigators, support
contractors, other federal agencies, and the Department of Defense.
Applicants must possess a PhD or equivalent experience in an ocean,
atmospheric or climate science or related disciplines. In addition, six
or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or
managerial experience pertinent to the program is required.
