The Mineral, Ice and Rock Physics Laboratory (MIRP) and Centre for Polar
Observation and Modelling (CPOM) at University College London announce a
two-year postdoctoral research fellowship on the project "Arctic Sea Ice
Dynamics Using Experiments and Multi-scale Modeling."
Satellite and submarine observations reveal the arctic sea ice cover is
thinning at a rapid rate, and understanding the arctic cryosphere is now
a high priority of UK climate science. Recent modeling studies show that
predictions of the sea ice flux into the Greenland Sea, where it may
affect the strength of the North Atlantic overturning circulation, are
highly sensitive to the treatment of sea ice stresses. The proposed
research will combine ice tank measurements of the in-plane deformation
of an artificial sea ice cover with numerical simulations to give a
validated model of sea ice deformation and sea ice stress.
The successful candidate will conduct experiments in the Environmental
Ice Basin at Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) and collaborate with
mathematicians and modelers at CPOM. A second research fellow, a modeler
supervised by Daniel Feltham of CPOM, will be appointed to this project
to link the experimental results to the climate model scale.
Applicants must have a PhD in the physical sciences or engineering with
strong experimental skills, as well as good working knowledge of
electronics, instrumentation, and programming. Previous research
experience in ice mechanics would be advantageous. The successful
candidate is expected to work in Hamburg for a period of up to three
weeks and to make other visits as necessary.
To apply, please send a C.V. and cover letter with the names of two
referees before Sunday, 30 September 2007 to:
