The Polar Climate Program, Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromso,
Norway invites applications for a three-year position as research
scientist/postdoc in sea ice modeling and physics on the project
"NorClim - Climate of Norway and the Arctic in the 21st Century,"
financed by the Research Council of Norway and participating
institutions.
The successful applicant will conduct research in sea ice physics, with
emphasis on sea ice model development and improvement. The work will
include the development of an advanced physical 1-D snow and sea ice
model in order to develop and test improved parameterizations to be
included in a full Earth System Model (ESM). The 1-D model should
include components for individual processes that are known to be
important (e.g., albedo feedback process, snow cover evolution, brine
distribution in sea ice). Different levels of model developments will be
validated with in situ sea ice data collected during field studies (NPI
long-term studies, process studies, and IPY research). The main part of
the work will be related to modeling, but it will be an asset,
especially in connection with validation experiments, if the candidate
is willing to participate in scientific cruises and fieldwork in the
Arctic.
The work will include close collaboration with scientists from other
Norwegian research environments, especially the Meteorological Institute
of Norway, University of Bergen, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing
Center, and Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.
NPI seeks candidates with a background in themes including sea ice
modeling and sea ice physics. Applicants must hold a PhD or possess
equivalent experience within sea ice modeling, sea ice physics, or
related fields.
Applications should include a CV, names of at least two referees, list
of publications, and details of relevant qualifications and experience.
Applicants should not submit original documents as enclosures will not
be returned. The position is open and the successful candidate may start
at the earliest possible time. Female scientists are encouraged to apply
for the position. The application deadline is Thursday, 15 November
2007.
