The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
at the University of Colorado at Boulder invites applications for an
associate/full professor position as the Director of the National Snow
and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). The position is rostered in CIRES, with
tenure track and teaching responsibilities in a relevant discipline
department.
Part of CIRES since 1982, NSIDC manages and distributes scientific data,
creates tools for data access, supports data users, performs scientific
research, and educates the public about the cryosphere. NSIDC's data and
research are critical to detecting, monitoring, and attributing climate
change and its impact on society. Satellite data, often used in
conjunction with in situ data, allow NSIDC scientists to monitor changes
in the cryosphere, including the recent record low summer sea ice extent
in the Arctic; the retreat of mountain glaciers at unusually high rates;
the decline in the extent of permafrost and frozen ground; the decline
in the extent of springtime snow cover in the northern hemisphere; and
the rise in temperatures in northern continental areas.
Required qualifications are a PhD in a related field and an outstanding
record of scholarly achievement. Demonstrated experience in managing and
administrating a scientific institution is highly desirable.
Interdisciplinary research expertise is particularly valued at CIRES. A
major commitment to and demonstrated excellence in research and the
ability to secure external research funding are expected, as well as a
commitment to excellence in teaching. Therefore, candidates must be able
to balance the direction of the data management components of the center
with a vigorous research program and a campus teaching commitment.
Review of applications will begin Friday, 15 February 2008, and will
continue until the position is filled. Applicants should send current
curriculum vitae, statements of research, teaching interests, and
administration experience, and facilitate for three letters of reference
to be sent to Karen Dempsey, CIRES Human Resources, at:
