University of Edinburgh, Scotland
Application Deadline: Thursday, 21 February 2008

The School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland
invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to study mass
changes of the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica. The aim of the project is
to relate satellite and ground-based observations of mass trends to
regional climate warming and episodes of wholesale ice shelf
disintegration. The successful candidate will be required to develop
both satellite and ground-based data sets, including participation in
two seasons of fieldwork in Antarctica. The ground-based observations
include phase-sensitive radar measurements of ice thickness change and
neutron-probe measurements of firn and ice density. The satellite
observations include interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)
measurements of ice velocity and satellite radar altimeter measurements
of ice elevation change.
A PhD or equivalent in physics or a similar subject is essential.
Applicants with experience in radar remote sensing and processing large
geophysical datasets, and with knowledge of computer programming (C,
Fortran, IDL, or Matlab) in a Unix environment are particularly welcome
to apply. Familiarity with the technique of InSAR is highly desirable,
and prior experience of fieldwork would be advantageous. The position is
funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council, and is available
from April 2008 for up to three years. For informal enquiries, please
contact Andrew Shepherd at: andrew.shepherd [at] ed.ac.uk.
Applications, which must include a completed Application Form, letter of
application, curriculum vitae, up to two publications, and the names and
addresses of two referees, may be submitted online at:
