The Institute of Oceanography, as part of the Cluster of Excellence,
KlimaCampus Hamburg, invites applicants for a PhD position with the THIN
ICE (Investigation of thin ice using dual-polarization, multi-frequency
microwave observations) project of the German Research Council (DFG).
The University of Hamburg, jointly with the Max Planck Institute for
Meteorology and the Institute for Coastal Research at the GKSS Research
Centre is establishing a trans-disciplinary research focus on
"Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction." The goal is to
analyze ongoing and past changes of the state of the climate system, in
response to natural and human-driven perturbations, to determine
predictable elements of the climate system over a broad range of space
and time scales, and to determine uncertainties intrinsic to predictions
of important climate system and environmental indices.
Thin ice plays an important role for the ocean-atmosphere interaction in
high latitudes. One goal of the project is to combine space-borne
sea-ice observations to identify thin ice and obtain an estimate of its
thickness. For this task, ground- and helicopter-based observations of
the sea ice physical and radar backscattering properties will be
combined with classification methods and numerical modeling of the radar
backscattering properties of the sea ice.
The research performed in this project is intended to build the basis
for a PhD dissertation at the University of Hamburg. The research
associate will provide assistance to the principle investigators on the
THIN ICE project, including:
- classification of space-borne active microwave sensor data for
improved thin sea ice identification,
- numerical modeling of radar backscattering properties of thin ice to
further understanding of backscattering processes of thin sea ice, and
- synthesis of above results and of existing air-borne active microwave
sensor data for improved retrieval of the thickness of thin sea ice.
Applicants must have a Master's Degree in a subject area qualifying the
holder to carry out the above-mentioned responsibilities.
The deadline for receipt of applications is Saturday, 15 March 2008.
Applications, including degree information and a current CV, should be
sent to:
