The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Subsistence,
announces the availability of a Subsistence Resource Specialist II
position. The Subsistence Resource Specialist II is based in the
Anchorage office, and will focus on research projects in the rural
regions of Southcentral and Southwest Alaska. These projects include
baseline studies of human resource uses, the development of proposals
for fishing and hunting regulations, and the study of customary and
traditional hunting and fishing patterns and practices. The position
requires travel to rural Alaska communities and regional centers,
approximately six times annually, with one-to-two week stays.
ADF&G is seeking a candidate with diverse capabilities, demonstrating
the following knowledge, skills, and abilities for at least one year of
work experience:
- Working with the cultures, resources, and geography of Alaska.
- Experience effectively communicating with individuals in a variety of
cultures and social contexts. This includes rural residents, advisory or
regulatory groups, tribal entities, and public agencies.
- Planning, organizing, and conducting research projects in rural
Alaska locations. Experience in conducting structured interviews, and
training and directing local research assistants.
- Collecting and disseminating resource information within the
department, and to stakeholders and the public.
- Understanding principles of social science research, and ethics in
research.
- Analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data, and technical
report-writing. Skills in MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint are essential.
Skill in other software, such as ARCGIS, SPSS, SAS, MS Access, or other
mapping, statistical, graphics, or database applications, is desirable.
