The Institute of Northern Engineering (INE), at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks, seeks a Director for the Water and Environmental Research
Center (WERC). This position will be funded for six (6) months with the
remaining six (6) months to be funded on PI-generated research. The
research professor position will be made at the assistant, associate, or
professor level, dependent on experience.

The Institute of Northern Engineering has grown by almost 400% in the
last ten years and the growth is expected to continue. INE has major
growth initiatives in the areas of climate, energy, and the environment
and expects the WERC to play a major role in this expansion. Although an
earned doctorate is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. Successful
applicants will have a demonstrated record of success in management and
research, including publications and outreach. Applicants should have
experience working with private and public external constituencies.

Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a vigorous research
program, mentor and supervise graduate students, as well as mentor and
supervise WERC faculty and staff. The director will represent WERC in
the national Institutes for Water Resources Program. This includes
travel to Washington DC, participation in US Geological Survey Institute
for Water Resources (IWR/USGS) meetings and activities, and management
of funds received from USGS through the IWR program. The director will
manage WERC laboratories and office space, and plan for the future of
WERC. The WERC director will be expected to develop and annually update
a 5-year plan for WERC.

WERC is a vibrant research community with ties to many academic
departments. Faculty and graduate students are attracted to WERC because
of its interdisciplinarity, vigor, and opportunity. Faculty in WERC are
internationally known for circum-arctic studies of the environment,
particularly river and snow hydrology. Much of WERC's reputation has
been built on its extensive fieldwork in the Arctic. In spite of its
Northern focus, WERC faculty work from pole to pole.
