Memorial University of Newfoundland seeks two graduate students to work
on a research program that examines the role of values and cultural
identity in shaping responses to climate change in Labrador communities.
The positions will start as soon as possible, and are based in St.
John's, Newfoundland, Canada.
Communities in coastal Labrador are experiencing the impacts of climate
variability and change. Potential topics include water resources, food
security, and historical accounts of climate in Labrador. The research
is in collaboration with the Nunatsiavut Government, NunatuKavut
Community Council, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Funding for the research is in place and community consultation will
start summer 2010.
Suitable undergraduate backgrounds include any specialization within
human geography or environmental studies, or anthropology, development
studies, and political science with an emphasis on the environment.
A strong undergraduate degree and some understanding of climate
variability and change, and human responses to climate change, are
prerequisites.
