The 27th Lowell Wakefield International Fisheries Symposium, entitled
"Fishing People of the North: Cultures, Economies, and Management
Responding to Change," will be held 14-17 September 2011 in Anchorage
Alaska. Organizers invite panel proposals and abstract submissions
through Monday, 15 November 2010.

This international symposium will provide a forum for scholars, fishery
managers, fishing families, and others to explore the human dimensions
of fishery systems and growing need to include social science research
in policy processes.

The themes for the symposium are as follows:
- Human/Environment Relationships
- Fishing Communities in Transition
- Indigenous and Rural Knowledge and Communities
- Governance and Management Issues in the North
- Celebrating the Life of Fishing Peoples

For panels, please submit a proposed panel title, abstract (250 words),
and expected speakers if known, by Monday, 15 November 2010 to Courtney
Carothers (clcarothers [at] alaska.edu). Individual paper and poster

    9th International Symposium on Permafrost Engineering

The Melnikov Permafrost Institute (Yakutsk, Russia), the Institute of
Northern Mining (Yakutsk, Russia), the Cold and Arid Regions Engineering
and Environmental Research Institute (Lanzhou, China), and the
Heilongjiang Institute of Cold Region Engineering (Harbin, China) are
pleased to announce the Ninth International Symposium on Permafrost
Engineering to be held in Mirny, Yakutia from 3-7 September 2011.

The aim of the Symposium is to provide a forum for discussion of
permafrost engineering issues, as well as for exchange of practical
experience in construction and maintenance of engineering structures on
frozen ground. We hope that the Symposium will bring together
researchers and engineers who work in cold/permafrost regions to discuss
the ways and means for early detection of adverse frost-related
processes that may cause economic losses and environmental damage, as
well as to provide climate change adaptation measures based on
permafrost monitoring and experimental research on frozen soil/rock
mechanics.

Symposium themes include:
- Physics and mechanics of frozen soils; thermal interaction between
structures and frozen ground.
- Permafrost-related geotechnical hazards: prediction and control.
- Construction and operation of engineering structures (hydro,
power, industrial, transportation) in cold regions.
- Mineral resources development in permafrost regions.
- Impact of climatic variations on the thermal state of permafrost:
theory, observations, and forecasting.

    Holocene Glacier Variability from the Tropics to the Poles

Organizers of a session entitled "Holocene Glacier Variability from the
Tropics to the Poles" announce a call for abstracts. The session will be
convened at the INQUA Congress, scheduled for 20-27 July 2011 in Bern,
Switzerland.

Glaciers respond sensitively to climate change. Recent (Holocene)
glacier fluctuations are a valuable proxy for terrestrial interglacial
paleoclimate conditions. A main challenge for interpreting paleoclimate
from past mountain glacier extents is distinguishing local and regional
patterns from global signals. Reconstructing Holocene glacier extents
involves many disciplines including terrestrial and marine geology,
geochronology and glaciology. For this session, we invite research on
Holocene glacier fluctuations around the globe. We hope to facilitate an
inter-hemispheric comparison of glacier records including locations in
the Tropics, European Alps, American Cordillera, Southern Alps of New
Zealand, Himalaya and Polar Regions and to identify future research
questions and directions.

    International Arctic Conference
    22-23 November 2010
    Lyon, France

Registration for the International Arctic Conference, scheduled for
22-23 November 2010 in Lyon, France, is currently open. The theme of the
conference is 'Geopolitical Issues and Equations in the 21st Century.'

In the Arctic, climatic warming is twice as marked as in the rest of the
world, and the arctic territories are being transformed. The shrinking
of the permanent sea ice cover is opening up navigation through the
North-West and the North-East passages and possibilities are arising
regarding the resources of the ocean floor and its surrounding
coastline.

The conference will examine the existing juridical arrangements, and
discuss what role can be played in the protection of the Arctic by
international organizations and institutions, as well as other
organizations in terms of regional cooperation. By bringing together
geophysicists, political scientists, jurists, geographers and
historians, this international conference intends to discuss and analyze
what is at stake in present controversies, to clarify modes of
governance, to explore the possibility of international regulation, and
to throw scientific light on this urgent and increasingly controversial
topic of major geopolitical interest. To register for the conference, an

The Conference objectives are threefold:
- To bring together a variety of scientific expertise to stimulate
debate and promote further research in the academic world (both
researchers and students);
- To disseminate the state of knowledge on the transformation of the
Arctic and its governance to a larger public; and
- To influence official policy.

The Conference is organized around four themes, arranged in the
following sessions:
- The Arctic: a geographic space in transformation;
- The Native peoples, political actors;
- Frontiers and international law; and
- Regional and international regulations.
