The International Glaciological Society announces a call for abstracts
for their symposium titled, "Polar Ice, Polar Climate, Polar Change."

Extended abstract submission deadline: Monday, 1 May 2017.

Submissions within the topics of polar remote sensing and polar
cryospheric and climate-system modeling are welcome.

Key focus areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Sea-ice mapping and observations,
  • Satellite or airborne observations of ice-sheet and glacier mass
    balance,
  • Model studies of polar regions,
  • Trends in snow cover over the Northern Hemisphere,
  • Calibration and validation studies,
  • Information from early satellite or other remote-sensing records, and
  • Data management and informatics.

The goals of the symposium are to provide a forum for presenting current
observational data of sea ice and polar ice sheets in both hemispheres,
and their ongoing changes; present and discuss results from models of
ongoing polar climate and cryospheric processes, and interactions
between sea ice and the climate system; examine the likely future course
of the sea-ice, ice-sheet, and polar climate systems as revealed by
coupled models; and entrain the global polar science community, at all
stages of career development, in discussing the state and direction of
Earth's polar regions.

To accommodate the post-symposium tour to view the solar eclipse, the
symposium will begin on Monday afternoon; talks will commence on Tuesday
and continue until Saturday afternoon.

The Arctic FRontiers Of SusTainability (Arctic-FROST) research
coordination network announces the availability of travel awards for
early career researchers to attend the Arctic-FROST network meeting and
Early Career Scholars Workshop on Community Sustainability in the Arctic.

Application deadline: 10 May 2017.

The theme of this meeting is "Community Sustainability in the Arctic:
What sustainability theories and practices work and what fail in Arctic
communities."

Submissions should address:

  • Sustainability and sustainable development in the Arctic or Sub-Arctic
    of particular relevance to the rest of the world,
  • Comparative studies of sustainability between the Arctic and other
    regions,
  • Studies from various geographic contexts that provide valuable
    insights into Arctic sustainability, and
  • Studies that analyze the role of outside actors in Arctic sustainable
    development.

Eligibility for the travel award requires that participants be:

  • an early career scholar within five years of receiving their PhD,
  • an Arctic-FROST network member,
  • prepared to make an oral presentation at the meeting on the subject
    related to sustainability and/or sustainable development in the Arctic
    or sub-Arctic regions, and
  • available to participate in all conference activities following the
    annual meeting.

Applications for the early career travel award must include an extended
abstract of the paper (500-750 words), a short biosketch (one page), a
statement of interest in workshop participation (one page), and register
as an Arctic-FROST member.

Arctic-FROST: Resources, Societies, Environments and Development in the
Changing North is a National Science Foundation-funded international
interdisciplinary collaborative network that teams together
environmental and social scientists, local educators, and community
members from all circumpolar countries to enable and mobilize research
on sustainable Arctic development, specifically aimed at improving
health, human development, and well-being of Arctic communities while
conserving ecosystem structures, functions, and resources under changing
climate conditions.
