This full-time, 12-month, fixed-term position, with possible
reappointment, will be located at the Marine and Geology Repository at
Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

Qualifications include:

  • A M.Sc., PhD preferred, in Marine Geology and/or Antarctic Sciences;
  • Five years of Marine Geology and/or Antarctic Science experience;
  • Experience with sediment cores; and
  • Experience with laboratory work and data analysis.

The successful candidate will manage the Antarctic Core Collection at
the Oregon State University (OSU) Marine and Geology Repository (MGR)
and facilitate its mission of archiving and distributing geological
samples, predominantly sediment cores, for scientific research and
education. This position will also serve as a liaison between the MGR
and the United States Antarctic Research Community (and international
research communities as appropriate) to facilitate Antarctic and
Southern Ocean marine geology.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and disseminate data and metadata via the MGR website and
    databases;
  • Review sample requests and provide samples of cores stored at the MGR
    for any qualified request;
  • Connect researchers seeking samples with principal investigators who
    have previously worked on cores;
  • Organize visits and sampling parties to the facility by national and
    international researchers;
  • Organize visits by school groups to the MGR for educational tours,
    organize summer schools, and supervise student workers at the MGR;
  • Manage scientific equipment housed at the MGR as a shared use
    facility; and
  • Train researchers on the operation of scientific equipment housed at
    MGR, potentially for use and support of seagoing expeditions on the
    research vessel Palmer or other research vessels.

This fixed-term, four-year fully funded position will be part of the
project titled, "Quaternary chronology of Arctic Ocean sediments" and will
be located at Stockholm University in Sweden. The working language for
this position is English.

Qualifications include:

  • A Master's degree or a university education worth at least 240
    European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which includes an undergraduate
    bachelor's degree (3 year, 180 ECTS) and at least one year (60 ECTS) of
    post-graduate (Master's level) studies, or the equivalent from an
    international university (e.g., a 4-year B.S.);
  • At least 90 ECTS in Geological Sciences or Geosciences;
  • At least 60 ECTS must be advanced (Master's level or 4th year BSc)
    geoscience including an individual project in geoscience; and
  • At least 30 credits in mathematics, physics, chemistry and/or biology,
    depending on the selected subject specialization in marine geology.

Students who have a degree in a closely related subject such as
chemistry, mathematics, physics, or geography may also be accepted into
this program.

The PhD student will acquire training and expertise in Arctic
paleoceanography and, more generally, methods for dating Quaternary
marine sediments. He/she will have the opportunity to integrate the
derived chronologies with paleoceanographic proxies to reconstruct
aspects of the late Quaternary environmental history of the Arctic
Ocean. These could include, but are not limited to, reconstructions of
the extent and dynamics of circum-Arctic ice sheets; variations in the
intensity and extent of sea ice during past glacial and interglacial
periods; and the timing and impact of changing oceanic exchange between
the Arctic, Pacific, and the Atlantic Oceans.
