Arctic Marine Cryospheric Chemistry
University of Manitoba
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
The Environmental Chemistry and Biogeochemistry Group at the University
of Manitoba is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to support work within
the area of Arctic Marine Cryospheric Chemistry. The position is full
time and can be funded for up to 5 years.
The successful candidate will examine freezing-temperature
chemical and biogeochemical processes of contaminants (e.g.,
mercury, oil) and carbon across the Arctic sea ice environment.
The research will involve both laboratory and field work,
including mesocosm-scale studies at the internationally unique
Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF) and the soon-to-be
operational Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO), and research
cruises onboard the Canadian Research Icebreaker CCGS Amundsen.
Applicants should have a strong background in the areas of
environmental chemistry, physical chemistry, (bio)geochemistry,
or chemical oceanography. Special consideration will be given to
those candidates with field experience in the Arctic and with sea
ice.
Interested applicants should send a Curriculum Vitae, transcripts, a
short statement of relevant research experiences/interests, as well as
the contact information for two references to Feiyue Wang
(Feiyue.Wang [at] umanitoba.ca).

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Science and Technology,
has an opening for a PhD student/researcher in the area of Chemical
Oceanography. The position is attached to the Centre for Arctic Gas
Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE) at UiT's Department of Geology.
The position is for a fixed term of four years.
Research in the Centre of excellence CAGE focuses on the role of the
Arctic Ocean methane hydrates in the context of environmental and
climate issues.
Successful candidate will investigate biogeochemical processes
associated with methane seepage and transport in the water column and
close to water-sediment interface, as well as their linkages to the
properties and transformation of organic matter in the water.
The PhD student is expected to actively collaborate with researchers
from the Norwegian Polar Institute (Troms*, Norway), University of Basel
(Austria), and Technical University of Denmark.
The position requires a Master's degree in chemical/biological
oceanography or a related field with expertise in microbiology and/or
biogeochemistry of organic matter. Knowledge in molecular methods
applicable for identification and quantification of microorganisms as
well as bioinformatics is beneficial. Lab work experience, experimental
work and experience at sea would be an asset. Basic computational skills
in Matlab and/or R are essential.
