1.University of Bremen seeks PhD student, Institute of Environmental
Physics
Bremen, Germany

The University of Bremen is seeking two PhD students in the area of
remote sensing of sea ice and the polaratmosphere. This will be a
fixed-term position for a duration of 3 years, based in Bremen, Germany.

PhD 1: The student will be expected to do Remote sensing of atmospheric
water vapor over Arctic sea ice and open ocean using satellite microwave
sensors in order to understand climate change in the Arctic, and the
observed amplification of global warming in the Arctic. The task
involves running but also adapting existing retrieval algorithms and
extensively analyzing and comparing large output data sets.

Ph.D. 2: The student will be expected to do retrieval of spectral
surface reflection properties from satellite and airborne observations
in order to quantitatively better understand the increased global
warming in the Arctic. The main focus of the research will be to analyze
the sources of uncertainties (e.g. different spectral or angular
resolution, varying cloud cover, varying surface properties) and use
existing radiative transfer models (SCIATRAN, MCARATS) to evaluate the
uncertainty when comparing data from satellite sensor and field or
airborne campaigns. The task assumes not only running, but also
improving the RT models and bulk processing of satellite data.

  1. Universite de Sherbrooke seeks PhD Student, Geophysics and Remote
    Sensing
    Quebec, Canada

The Universite de Sherbrooke is seeking a PhD student for a project in
Temporal and spatial snow characterization using high-resolution
modeling and microwave remote sensing in the Canadian High Arctic. This
will be a fixed-term position for a duration of 3 years, based in
Quebec, Canada starting August-September 2016.

Within GRIMP's research program on winter extreme events in the arctic
in collaboration with the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS,
Cambridge Bay, Nunavut), this Ph.D. project will focus on 1) the
application of the snow thermodynamic model SNOWPACK to the Greiner
watershed, on Victoria Island, Nunavut (Canada). A high spatial
resolution application for the SNOWPACK model will be developed, applied
and validated with field measurements in order to monitor snow changes
in a warming Arctic. The second main objective is to 2) use microwave
remote sensing to retrieve state variables from space and monitor
extreme events such as rain-on-snow which have important impacts on
grazing conditions, surface energy balance etc.

The Ph.D. candidate will be funded for a maximum duration of 3-years,
starting August-September 2016. The Universite de Sherbrooke is a French
university and the PhD student will need to take 3 classes in French.
The thesis can be written in English. Necessary skills include: Advanced
coding, remote sensing, fieldwork experience, knowledge of snow physical
processes, teamwork.

Interested candidates should send a letter of motivation and CV to:
