- Scripps Institution of Oceanography seeks Professor
Polar Science
San Diego, California
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San
Diego (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) invites applications to a professor
position in polar science. The preference is for applicants applying at
the level of assistant professor, but all levels will be considered. The
position will be based in San Diego, California.
Relevant research areas could include glaciology, oceanography, climate,
biogeochemistry, and microbiology. Scripps is particularly interested in
individuals able to establish connections between more than one element
of the polar system. Possible foci include land ice, sea ice,
biogeochemistry, the carbon cycle, microbial processes, paleoclimate,
subglacial processes (including biology), and high-latitude climate
processes. Research approaches can include observations (field and
remote sensing), modeling, genomics, and dynamics.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes, supervise
research at both the graduate and undergraduate level and contribute to
leadership on issues of equity and diversity. The position requires a
PhD degree in a relevant field and a competitive record of publication,
as well as evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active
research program consistent with the opportunity to have done so at this
career level. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the highest
standards of scholarship and professional activity, or for junior
scholars to have the potential thereof.
Application deadline: 15 September 2015.

- University of Reading seeks Postdoctoral Candidate
Sea Ice
Reading, United Kingdom
The University of Reading seeks a postdoctoral candidate for a position
on sea ice. This is a fixed-term application for a duration of three
years, and will be based in Reading, United Kingdom.
The reduction of the Arctic sea ice cover is a prominent indication of
climate change and has excited considerable scientific and general
interest. The inability of climate models to adequately represent the
rate of Arctic sea ice loss or the small increase in Southern Ocean sea
ice has stimulated interest in the physical basis of the model
representation of sea ice and ocean processes in the polar regions.
This project will focus on the atmosphere to sea ice to ocean momentum
transfer in the Arctic and Southern Oceans. The model of air-sea ice and
sea ice-ocean drag forces will be examined and modified to account for
form drag and stability using theory and observations. The
representation of these drag laws will be explored in climate sea ice
models, coupled sea ice-ocean models, and atmosphere-sea ice-ocean
models. The simulations will be compared to observations and analysed
for their implications.
The successful applicant will have aptitude for, and previous experience
of, numerical modeling of physical environmental systems and will join a
research team investigating related aspects of the polar oceans.
Application deadline: 7 September 2015.

- Dartmouth College seeks Professor
Ecology
Hanover, New Hampshire
The Department of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth College seeks
applicants for an open-rank Professorship in ecology. This is a
permanent position will be based in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Dartmouth welcomes highly qualified candidates working in any area of
ecology, but especially seeks applicants whose research would include
field studies in local ecosystems to address broadly relevant conceptual
issues in ecology. The successful candidate will be expected to
supervise an independent research program that will attract extramural
funding, provide research training for graduate and undergraduate
students, and teach biology courses at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. The new hire will contribute to the newly expanded graduate
program in Ecology, Evolution, Ecosystems and Society and offer
exceptional courses in one or more of the following areas: population
biology, species interactions, disease ecology, community ecology,
ecosystem science, field ecology, and biostatistics.
This position is open until filled, but the intended start-date
is 15 September 2015.

- Norwegian Polar Institute seeks Postdoctoral Candidate
Oceanography, Numerical Modeling
Tromso, Norway
The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) invites applications for a
postdoctoral research fellow position in numerical ocean modeling. This
is a fixed-term, three-year position (with possible one-year extension)
that will be based in Tromso, Norway.
The position is funded through the Tidewater Glacier Retreat Impact on
Fjord Circulation and Ecosystems (TIGRIF) project. The work will be
conducted in the oceans and sea ice research department. The aim of the
TIGRIF project is to improve understanding of how ongoing retreat of
fjord-terminating glaciers will impact future fjord circulation and
exchanges with the ocean, and how these factors together affect the
local marine ecosystem. The work will consist of setting up and running
numerical fjord models with varying resolutions to cover the most
important dynamical aspects of glacier-fjord interaction and fjord-ocean
exchanges. Field data such as hydrography data collected by moorings,
from ship and by instrumented seals, will be processed and used for
evaluation and tuning of model performance. Analysis and publication of
results is the ultimate product of the work.
The candidate must hold a PhD in physical oceanography or a closely
related geophysical field, or computational mathematics/numerics. The
PhD must be completed and approved in order for the application to be
considered. Experience with running 3D hydro-dynamical circulation
models is required, and candidates that have worked with the ROMS-model
will be preferred. An interest in connecting physics with
biogeochemistry or marine biology is an asset. Publication of results is
of great importance and recent articles in highly rated peer-reviewed
scientific journals must demonstrate such ability. The candidate must
also have experience with one or more of the following tools: Matlab,
Python, R.
Application deadline: 21 August 2015.
