3:00-4:30 p.m. EDT on Monday, 12 May 2014
The National Research Council (NRC) announces a webinar briefing and
discussion on the recent report, "Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S.
Arctic Marine Environment." The webinar will be held 3:00-4:30 p.m. EDT
on Monday, 12 May 2014.
Committee chair, Martha Grabowski, of Le Moyne College and Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, will discuss the report's main points regarding
key oil spill research priorities, critical data and monitoring needs,
mitigation strategies, and important operational and logistical issues.
There will be opportunity for questions at the conclusion of the
briefing.

- Call for Community Input
NRC Study to Advise NSF Science Priorities for Antarctic and
Southern Ocean Research
The National Research Council (NRC) announces a call for input on a
study to advice NSF science priorities for Antarctic and Southern Ocean
research. The study is being conducted by a committee of the Division on
Earth and Life Studies of the National Academies.
The committee is charged to articulate a strategic vision for NSF's
investments in Antarctic and Southern Ocean research. The committee
seeks community engagement and input to build on the vision and key
scientific questions identified in the 2011 NRC report, "Future Science
Opportunities in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean" and other related
activities. The goal of this study is to recommend priorities for
compelling research that could feasibly be undertaken in the coming
decade or so and outline practical steps forward to implement this
research.
Community input to the plan will be facilitated via an online "Virtual
Town Hall" and by a series of outreach events to be held at various
locations across the country. Dates and locations of these events are to
be announced.
