The Norwegian Meteorological Institute seeks candidates for a research
position with the Norwegian Ice Service. This is a two-year position
with possibility for extension to a permanent position. It is based in
Tromso, Norway.

The position is associated with the European Commission 7th Framework
project "Ice, Climate, and Economics - Arctic Research on Change"
(ICE-ARC) and the analysis of passive microwave satellite sea ice
concentration datasets and optical satellite images. The successful
applicant will be expected to work on other applied science and
development for the Ice Service, as well as other projects. The Ice
Service produces high-resolution ice charts of the European and Weddell
Sea sectors of the Arctic and Antarctic respectively. It is also engaged
in research projects for national and international funding agencies as
well as commercial clients.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include analysis of
passive microwave satellite sea ice concentration datasets from various
providers to determine variability of errors during the summer period.
This should be done with cross-reference to optical satellite data from
sensors including AVHRR and MODIS. Other responsibilities include:
development of geospatial data processing software including
ice-charting tools, research on national and international research
projects, and analysis of ice conditions for Ice Service customers.

The successful candidate will hold a master's degree, or higher, in a
geoscience discipline; have experience with software development in
Python; experience with application development using Geographic
Information System (GIS) software libraries; research experience using
passive microwave satellite sensor (e.g., SMMR, SSM/I, AMSR-E, or SSMIS)
sea ice concentration datasets and optical satellite sensors (e.g. AVHRR
and MODIS); and experience with national and international collaboration
on project work including writing papers, reports and proposals.

Polar Field Services (PFS) seeks candidates for the position of Lead
Greenland Science Project Manager. This full-time position is based at
the PFS headquarters in Littleton, Colorado.

The Lead Greenland Science Project Manager is responsible for the
planning, documentation and coordination of Greenland-based research
projects and works directly with researchers, service-providers, and
government agencies. This position supervises a team of project managers
providing direction and guidance with project planning, air contracts,
procurement, and troubleshooting.

The successful candidate will have prior supervisory responsibility with
five to seven years of related work experience. Knowledge of traditional
project management methods and project controls are preferred. A
bachelor's degree in a related field is required. The ideal candidate
will have experience with: projects involving helicopter or small fixed
wing aircraft, prior science project management experience, some field
work and polar experience, experience working directly with clients, and
experience in delegation and assignment of projects.

The University of Texas at El Paso, Department of Biological Sciences
seeks candidates for a master's degree or PhD position. The position
will begin during the summer of 2014 and is based in El Paso, Texas.

The successful candidate will work with the McLaren lab, which bridges
the fields of community and ecosystem ecology. Research at the lab
includes manipulative experiments in the field, with a focus on northern
ecosystems. Potential graduate research projects would be designed
collaboratively between the student and the advisor with a preference
for research conducted at the Kluane Lake Research Station in northern
Canada. Local projects in the Chihuahuan Desert are also a possibility.

Qualified candidates should have a bachelor's or master's degree in
ecology, biology, environmental science, or related field; and show a
strong interest in plant ecology, ecosystem ecology, or biogeochemistry.
Ideal candidates will have some previous research experience in field
ecology, a strong work ethic, be able to work independently and with a
field crew, and availability to begin in May or June 2014.
