The new Australasian Antarctic Expedition 2013-2014 (AAE) team will mark
the centenary of the original Australasian Antarctic Expedition led by
the great Australian scientist and explorer Sir Douglas Mawson. The AAE
team of 46 women and men, is a privately-funded voyage of discovery
aiming to discover just how much change has taken place Antarctica over
the past 100 years. There is opportunity for four PhD students to join
the expedition as volunteers.
Departing from Hobart, Tasmania on 25 November 2013, the team will
retrace the route of the original AAE, repeating the measurements made
on Mawson's expedition and using new technologies to gain insights into
this remote region over two legs on board an ice strengthened research
ship, the MV Akademik Shokalskiy. Leg 1, from Hobart to southern New
Zealand via subantarctics, will take place 25 November - 7 December
2013. Leg 2, from Southern New Zealand (return) to Antarctica via the
subantarctics, will take place 8 December 2013 - 4 January 2014.
To be eligible, applicants must be a registered postgraduate student
able to place their studies on hold for a minimum of 3 weeks between 23
November 2013 and 6 January 2014. Successful applicants will support the
scientific team and the communication of their results on the expedition.
This will be a challenging but rewarding role, operating in a hostile
environment, and working closely between the expedition and public. This
should not be considered a holiday, or support for current research;
joining the AAE will provide valuable training in science communication
and add significantly to a curriculum vitae. While on the expedition all
costs will be covered but applicants must fund travel to and from Hobart
and/or southern New Zealand. Applications from all disciplines are
welcome.
To apply, applicants must post a two-minute YouTube movie clip
explaining why they want to join the expedition and how they feel this
will help their future career. Submissions must be uploaded using a
YouTube account and the URL sent to the AAE team via the contact page
(http://www.spiritofmawson.com/contact-aae/), with the title of the
applicant's PhD and the name and contact details of two supervisors. Set
the YouTube submission to 'Privacy Settings: Unlisted,' or the
application will be available to the general public.
Deadline for submissions: 13 September 2013 at 5:00 p.m. Australian
Eastern Seaboard Time. The AAE team expects to contact shortlisted
candidates for an online interview sometime during October.

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine
Research (AWI) in Germany seeks to fill two positions, one PhD and one
Postdoc.
PhD position "Interpretation of ice-core signals":
Based on new ice samples from Antarctica and on published ice-core data,
the successful candidate will improve the understanding of the
temperature signal recorded in the water isotopes of polar ice-cores.
The project involves experimental as well as a theoretical work.
Postdoc position "Paleoclimate data analysis/modeling":
The candidate will test and improve paleoclimate reconstructions from
terrestrial climate archives, mainly from bioindicators as pollen data.
This includes statistical syntheses of existing global datasets and
idealized experiments with climate and vegetation models to validate and
develop reconstruction techniques.

International Permafrost Association

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine
Research (AWI), Department of Periglacial Research, seeks to appoint an
Executive Director for the International Permafrost Association (IPA)
Secretariat. The position will be based in Potsdam, Germany, and the
appointment is expected to start 1 September 2013.
The IPA Secretariat is led by the Executive Director, who is responsible
for the management of the organization together with the Executive
Committee of the IPA. The Secretariat also coordinates the organization
of the International Conference on Permafrost to be held in Potsdam,
Germany in 2016.The Executive Director of the IPA will work closely with
the Executive Committee to manage the operations of the organization,
including strategic contributions to the IPA's goals and scientific
framework and planning of scientific events, in particular the
International Conference on Permafrost in 2016 in Potsdam.
Ideally, the successful candidate will have a PhD or Masters degree in
permafrost research or a related subject (this is however not formally
required) and experience in the management of international projects
and/or organizations. Excellent negotiation and communication skills, a
flexible management style, and knowledge of Germany are desirable. An
excellent command of English is required. Experience with content
management systems and graphic design and editing would be assets.
