Bryophyte Taxonomy

The Icelandic Institute of Natural History (IINH) seeks a research
associate in bryophyte taxonomy. The position is for 18 months with a
possible extension and located in Gardabaer, Iceland.
This position is part of an ongoing research project on bryophyte
description and habitat mapping in Iceland. The position is primarily
responsible for identification of species from about 900 collected
samples. A complete bryophyte collection of the Icelandic flora is
available at IINH for reference.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in bryology or experience in
bryophyte taxonomy, biogeography, and knowledge of the bryophyte-flora
of Iceland. Knowledge of molecular techniques is desirable.

- IARC seeks Instructors
Physical Oceanography and Arctic Sea Ice
2013 Summer School Cruise
Kirkenes, Norway
The International Arctic Research Center (IARC) of the University of
Alaska Fairbanks seeks two instructors in physical oceanography and
arctic sea ice for the 2013 summer school session cruise on board the
Russian research vessel "Akademik Fedorov." The 33-day cruise departs 20
August 2013 and returns 22 September 2013 from and to Kirkenes, Norway.
The 2013 IARC summer school session, entitled "Climate Change in the
Arctic Ocean" is organized for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers,
and early-career scientists and will be conducted jointly with an arctic
expedition as part of the Nansen and Amundsen Basin Observational System
(NABOS) project.
The session will consist of background lectures, fieldwork, and
mini-projects. The mini-projects will be performed in collaboration with
summer school instructors and members of the expedition. Each instructor
is expected to prepare five to six lectures on special topics of the
instructor's choice and one or two mini-projects that can involve
modeling, collecting data, or working with available datasets. There is
a possibility for instructors to conduct their own research program
depending on compliance with permission issued by the Russian
authorities.
Travel expenses to and from Kirkenes, Norway will be reimbursed and
instructors will receive additional compensation.

- IRIS seeks Polar Services Coordinator
Arctic and Antarctic Activities

The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) seeks a
polar services coordinator of arctic and Antarctic activities. The
position involves extensive travel and is based in Washington D.C.
IRIS is a university research consortium dedicated to exploring the
Earth's interior and understanding earthquakes through the collection
and distribution of earthquake data.
The polar services coordinator serves as the primary contact for
principal investigators; provides technical advice and leadership on the
development of IRIS polar activities; and collaborates with corporate
leadership to represent IRIS polar activities in interactions with NSF,
IRIS governance, and the research community.
The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in engineering or
science or equivalent professional experience, at least five years of
professional experience in a technical leadership position, polar
geophysical field and logistics experience, and prior supervisory or
management experience.

Nansen Visiting Professorship in Arctic Studies

The University of Akureyri seeks candidates for the Nansen Visiting
Professorship in Arctic Studies. The position is awarded for a
twelve-month period starting 1 December 2013 and is based in Akureyri,
Iceland.
The post is awarded each year to candidates from different fields of
study who work with issues concerning legal, economic, social, and
natural circumstances of the Arctic.
The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) with
a strong academic background in arctic studies relevant to the
sustainable social and ecological development in arctic regions, the
ability to stimulate academic cooperation and exchange of ideas between
the Icelandic and Norwegian academic communities in the field of Arctic
studies, experience in working across disciplines with complex human,
environmental, and social issues, research experience relating to the
Arctic, experience participating in international research networks, and
a proven ability to obtain research grants.
