    8th Antarctic Meteorological Observing, Modeling, and Forecasting

The 8th Antarctic Meteorological Observing, Modeling, and Forecasting
Workshop (AMOMFW), convened by the Antarctic Meteorological Research
Center (AMRC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, announces a call
for registrations. The workship will be held 10-12 June 2013, at the
University of Wisconsin's Pyle Center in Madison, Wisconsin. There will
be an informal icebreaker on 9 June.

This workshop brings together those with research and
operational/logistical interests in Antarctic meteorology and
forecasting and related disciplines. As in the past, the annual
activities and status of the observing (e.g. Automatic Weather Stations)
and modeling (Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System) efforts will be
addressed, and feedback and results from their user communities will be
solicited. More broadly, this workshop also is a forum for current
results and ideas in Antarctic meteorology, numerical weather
prediction, and weather forecasting from contributors around the world.
There will be discussions on the relationships among international
efforts and Antarctic forecasting, logistical support, and science.
Papers and posters on these topics are welcomed.

Organizers request that anyone planning to attend the workshop register
as soon as possible, to allow adequate time for planning purposes.
Additionally, the room block reserved for the event will only be held
through 9 May 2013, so lodging should also be secured quickly.

    Changes in Alpine and Arctic Flora Under Climate Change
    September 2013

Organizers announce the availability of two international conferences
regarding changes in alpine and arctic flora under climate change. Both
will be held in Bergun, Switzerland during the month of September 2013.
They will present opportunities to share, learn, and discuss recent
research findings and their practical implications.

The first conference will be held 17-20 September, and is entitled
'International Tundra Experiment ITEX--More than 20 years of tundra
vegetation change research.' The ITEX network has focused on the impacts
of climate change on plant species in tundra and alpine vegetation. All
researchers interested in changes in arctic and alpine tundra are
welcome to attend. Contributions ranging from observations of
variability to experimental manipulations are invited. For further

The second conference will be held 22-25 September, and is entitled
'Faster, Higher, More? Past, Present, and Future Dynamics of Alpine and
Arctic Flora under Climate Change.' The conference aims to present
current research in climate-driven changes in species distribution in
alpine and arctic environments. It further intends to link research
efforts across disciplines and regions and to discuss potential
implications on conservation efforts and land management in the
respective areas. The conference is open to all interested researchers

  1. Symposium Announcement
    Climate Change, Polar Exploitation, and Geopolitical Consequences

    Groningen, the Netherlands

Organizers announce that the registration for a symposium entitled
'Climate Change, Polar Exploitation, and Geopolitical Consequences' is
now available. It will be convened on Thursday, 2 May 2013 in Groningen,
the Netherlands.

The event will also serve as a farewell symposium to honor the work of
Louwrens Hacquebord, who is stepping down from his position of director
of the Arctic Centre of the University of Groningen and will become a
professor emeritus. The symposium will include presentations from
leading polar scientists, as well as Peter Jordan, the new director of
the Arctic Centre.
